Chapter Six

Reece raced through the woods back to Teddy’s parents’ house. Anger fought with bafflement. Why does she keep rejecting me?

He’d thought for sure, given her enthusiastic response to his love making at her house, that she’d finally abandoned her stubborn stance. But instead, she’d lashed out and pushed him away. He’d left even as he wanted to gather her up in his arms and hug her. He’d smelled her tears when she gave him her back, sensed her misery, and it killed him to know he was the cause. I haven’t done anything wrong, and yet she acts like I have. What’s it going to take to get through to her? To make her realize I’m here to stay?

He understood his initial attraction came about because of the mating bond, but the more he got to know her, the more she drew him. When he’d emerged earlier from the woods and seen her standing there like a naked goddess in the starlight, he’d chastised himself for ever thinking she appeared less than perfect. Yes, she had a lush frame, but instead of finding it repugnant, it made her more desirable. Her shape just seemed more womanly, from her full breasts to her indented waist, her rounded, soft belly and flaring hips. She was perfection. Mine.

He couldn’t believe that she thought he’d leave the moment she got pregnant. Sure, this overwhelming need to touch her and be with her would tone down as they settled into life as a couple, but to jump from that to the erroneous conclusion that he’d cheat on her? Reece howled his frustration aloud.

Never. Reece might have played many roles in his life, but a cheater wasn’t one of them. His mad dash through the woods brought him to the edge of the forest where he’d initially stripped to chase after Teddy. His clothes still lay in an untidy pile and he shifted back to his human shape so he could pull them on. Long strides took him across the front lawn toward his parked truck.

A voice called him from the porch. “Is she still being stubborn?” Teddy’s mama, Annette, sat on a rocking chair, and Reece, needing answers, went to sit with her. “I don’t understand why she’s fighting me.

For a moment, the only sound was the creaking of the chair as Annette rocked. “Teddy had a hard time growing up. You might have noticed Teddy looks a little different from the rest of us. She’s an offshoot from her grandmother’s side where the bears were smaller and chubbier. Growing up, she had to put up with a lot of teasing and bullying over the fact she was smaller and not as slim as the rest of the pack.”

“I’ve apologized for my initial reaction,” he protested even as he cringed that at their first meeting, he’d unwittingly caused Teddy to recall the bullying of her youth.
